Her Little Black Book:
This Time, We Date With Purpose
If we’re getting back out there, we’re going in equipped — body, mind, spirit, and planner.
Let’s be honest with each other the way only sisters can be.
A woman can say she’s decentering men all she wants — and good for her, truly. But the moment she walks out that door, hair done, outfit right, smelling like intention? Somewhere in the back of her mind, she’s open. She’s aware. She’s hoping.
And there is nothing wrong with that.
We are built for connection. Created for covenant. The desire to love and be loved is not a weakness — it’s one of the most human, most sacred things we carry. So no, sis, we are not going to shame ourselves for wanting it. What we are going to do is change how we show up for it.
Because if we’re getting back out there — and many of us are — we’re going in equipped.
But First — Why Do We Keep Choosing Wrong?
Before we talk strategy, we have to talk honestly about the pattern. Because sis, if we’re going to date differently, we have to understand why we’ve made the choices we’ve made before.
Psychology Today puts it plainly: many of the men we’re drawn to aren’t wrong because they’re bad people — they’re wrong because our instincts, shaped long before we had language for them, are pointing us toward familiar rather than healthy. Research shows that women can sometimes gravitate toward traits — surface-level confidence, a compelling presence, even the fact that someone else already wants him — without pausing to ask whether this person has the character to build something lasting. Mutual respect, it turns out, predicts long-term relationship success more reliably than initial attraction does.
Studies on long-term relationship success consistently point to one factor above all others: mutual respect. Research suggests that respect — more than love, more than attraction — is what actually sustains a lasting partnership. And yet, it’s rarely what we lead with when we feel that pull.
Honesty is also consistently linked to better relationship outcomes and greater individual well-being. The man who is truthful over the one who is thrilling may be the better long-term investment — even when the heart doesn’t immediately agree.

Psychologist Dr. Sabrina Romanoff writes that many of us are drawn to unavailable partners not because we’re naive, but because unavailability feels familiar. We may be unconsciously recreating early relational patterns — trying to win over someone emotionally unavailable the same way we tried, as little girls, to reach a parent who wasn’t quite present. The cycle doesn’t come from weakness. It comes from wiring.
Research suggests that we sometimes choose partners who are emotionally unavailable not in spite of that unavailability, but because of it — because it mirrors the relational template we learned in childhood. We may seek a “corrective experience,” attempting to finally win the love that was withheld early on. But the problem is this: choosing unavailable partners often reinforces rather than heals the belief that love must be earned, that freely given love feels less real.
Here’s what makes this pattern so stubborn — it’s not just about them. Sometimes, we choose unavailable people because we ourselves aren’t fully ready for the closeness a secure relationship requires. The unavailable partner keeps intimacy at a manageable distance.

The Numbers Don’t Lie — But They Don’t Define You Either
Here’s what the data actually shows when we stop letting the doom-and-gloom headlines do all the talking:
The climate is shifting, sis. The question is: are you ready?
Desire Without Discernment Is a Dangerous Driver
We’ve talked about mating season here in the Circle — and I mean that literally. Our bodies move in cycles. There are seasons when desire rises, when longing feels louder, when the pull toward closeness is harder to ignore. That is not a flaw. That is biology. That is womanhood.
But as I’ve written before: desire is energy. And energy without direction becomes destruction. When desire drives the car and discernment stays home, we end up making choices we wouldn’t make clear-headed — giving access to men who perform strength but can’t provide stability, sleeping next to the very person who will disrupt our peace.
“Discipline reframes desire. Instead of saying ‘I have needs’ and letting those needs dictate our actions, we can say: I understand my cycle. I recognize these feelings. But I will not let them rule me.“
This Time, We’re Moving Different
If you remember the movie Next Friday , then you know exactly what I mean when I say: no Baby D energy.
We’ve graduated from that.
This season is about confidence, not convincing.
It’s about allowing a man the space to show his intentions through consistent action while we sit back, observe, and gather information. clarity, No rushing. No overexplaining. No trying to “sell” ourselves. , and the quiet confidence of a woman who knows what she’s worth.
The truth is, a man who is interested doesn’t need to be persuaded. And a man who isn’t will reveal that too—and that’s valuable information. So we’re dating differently. We’re protecting our hearts, keeping our standards high, and remembering that our worth isn’t determined by who chooses us. And yes… the cookie shop is still closed.
Two Years and Counting: A Word From Someone Who Gets It
I’ve been abstaining going on two years. Two years of choosing myself, healing the parts of me that used to give access to people who hadn’t earned it, and learning what it actually feels like to be unbothered.
And I’ll be the first to tell you — if I’m going to walk back into the arena of romance, I am not going in unprepared. I’ve done too much work. Come too far. I’m not winging my re-entry into dating the same way I waddled into relationships in my 20s.
And I don’t think you should either.
Dating With a Purpose Requires a Plan
Here’s what I know about us: Black women are planners when it comes to everything except love. We plan our finances. We plan our careers. We plan our kids’ birthday parties down to the napkin color. But when it comes to dating? We wing it — and then wonder why we keep landing in the same places.
Intentional living requires intentional dating. And intentional dating requires tools.
That’s exactly why I created Her Little Black Book — The Dating Planner, now available in The Circle Shop.
